A Legacy Woven Through Generations
According to ancient lore, the Devanga community traces its lineage back to Devalar, a celestial being born from the third eye of Lord Shiva. Devalar was tasked with a sacred mission: to weave clothing for the gods and to teach the art of weaving to the world.
While on his journey to retrieve lotus fiber from Lord Vishnu's navel, Devalar was ambushed by the Panchaboothas (five elemental spirits) in the dark of a new moon night. In his distress, he prayed to Shakti Devi, who manifested as Sowdeshwari Amman to vanquish the spirits. Legend says that Devalar used the vibrant essence of this divine encounter to dye his first threads in shades of white, black, red, green, and yellow.
The story of Kuthampully’s prominence in Kerala began with the Kochi Royal Family. Having heard of the exquisite craftsmanship of the Devanga weavers in Karnataka (specifically the Vijayanagara Empire), the King extended a royal invitation. He sought the finest garments for the palace and the people of his kingdom.
The weavers initially settled in the Malabar region, but their craft required a steady supply of fresh water for processing and dyeing the yarn. This search led them to the fertile banks of the Nila (Bharathapuzha), specifically a place then known as Kuthanpally, which eventually evolved into the name we know today: Kuthampully.
Today, Kuthampully is synonymous with the Kasavu (gold zari) saree and traditional dhotis. The process remains a meticulous family affair each step mastered and passed down through generations of dedicated weavers.

To this day, on the night of the New Moon (Amavasi), the weavers of Kuthampully refrain from weaving out of respect for their ancestor Devalar's struggle maintaining a vegetarian lifestyle as an act of devotion. Each year, the village comes alive with the Deva Pooja Mahotsavam, a vibrant festival of gratitude dedicated to Sowdeshwari Amman for protecting their ancestors and preserving the sacred craft of weaving.
